Dr. Ben Carson was born in Detroit on September 18, 1951. He earned a degree in Psychology from Yale University and worked as an X-ray technician, a bank teller, and school bus driver prior to enrolling in medical school at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, after which he completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, specializing in neurosurgery. He stayed at Johns Hopkins for 29 years, becoming the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. He retired in 2013. In 2014, Carson announced his affiliation with the Republican party. He and wife Lacena (“Candy”) have three children.
